Q & A Time With Dr. Young

Q.  Whom do I call if I get sick between clinic visits?

A.  During business hours, you should contact Joy St. John at (205) 975-0763 and speak with her or leave a voice message.  If you follow the instructions and mark the message "Urgent," she will be paged to get your message.  After hours, call the University Hospital Paging Operator at (205) 934-3411 and explain who you are and ask them to page the "Pulmonary Doctor On Call."  That person will call you back promptly.

Q.  What will I do if I need help from a social work, dietitian, or a physical or respiratory therapist?

A.  Individuals from each of those fields are part of the adult care team, and you will get to know them during your clinic visits and hospital stays.  Joy or Dr. Young can enlist their help for you at any time in between these visits.

Q.  I've liked things just fine at Children's!  Why do we need an Adult Program anyways?

A.  As patients with CF are living longer and longer and now routinely live into their 30's and beyond.  At this age, they develop many of the same health concerns that other adults face.  These concerns are things that internists or "doctors for adults," are specially trained and experienced in dealing with.  Similarly, hospitals that care for adults are uniquely equipped to handle the health issues confronting these patients and have specially designed programs (for example, lung transplantation) that will be helpful to adult CF patients.  For these reasons, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, as well as adult and pediatric pulmonologists around the country, have been strongly committed to the development of adult programs as the very best way to provide the best possible care to adult patients with CF.
