Parent Discussion and Education Group Update:

How To Talk To Insurance Companies

This is a time for parents to get together and learn more about how to live, learn, and teach about Cystic Fibrosis.  Learn how to be a better guide and parent to your child.  In the past, we have covered such subjects as: social security, alternative methods to respiratory therapy, and talking to teachers about CF.

On January 20th, we will have a speaker from Blue Cross / Blue Shield talk with us about insurance.  This will not be on how to get insurance coverage, but on how to be a good steward of your policy.  We want to learn how to tell if we are getting double charged, or how to advocate when buying a piece of equipment would be cheaper than renting it like we are sometimes forced to do.

Bottom line is it is wise to learn how to be a good steward of your insurance policy because most insurance companies have things such as lifetime maximums.  Many CF patients come close to this cap (usually $1 million) because of the rise in the cost of medicines and equipment.  Come and learn more about this interesting topic that pertains to everyone.

We meet at Briarwood Presbyterian Church from 1 - 3 PM.  We do not recommend bringing your children due to cross-infection issues.  If you need support in any way to be able to attend, please contact Staci Thrasher at (205) 939-5499.

You can also find more information about our Parent Discussion and Education Group Meetings by visiting the Birmingham Cystic Fibrosis Center website.
